One of the biggest, most productive secrets I can give you is to keep a workout journal. No, it’s not a diary. It’s a journal. Stop saying that.
Seriously? Look, I am not bringing a “diary” to the gym. I am bringing a TRAINING LOG. OK? Big difference.
So what I do is between every set I take out Presh–my training log, that’s right, and record what just went down: reps, rest, and weight. Then, what I do at the end of every week is I cuddle up to my not diary with a cup of warm chamomile tea and see what went well and what I need more work on. Pride and Prejudice is usually on in the background.
And this is the same thing I do with my clients, you understand. Every week, I tell them to send me their Precious. Training logs!
Because I see logging to be the same as recording yourself as a musician, or re-reading if you are a writer. There is really no better tool for getting better. Since a lot of the time you won’t notice your mistakes when you’re in the middle of working out. Because why would you? Not when you’ve got a pump like that going on.
What gets reviewed, gets improved!
Maybe you’re strumming out of time, or not bending a note high enough. That’s why you record your playing as a musician. So you can figure out where you’re sucking, and where you shine.
Same with fitness and nutrition. Maybe you’re not doing enough mobility work. Maybe your press has stalled compared to your squat.
Maybe you’re somehow eating a bowl of Peanut M&Ms for lunch when you could have swore on all things you were consistently having grilled chicken salad. I get it. You can’t fix what you aren’t aware of.
But hey, now we know. So let’s adjust.
My Challenge for YOU
For one week, record what you eat and what you do in the gym. Don’t worry about anything else. If you lift it, write it down. If it goes in your mouth, put it in Precious.
Because when you do this, magic happens. Things improve without you hardly trying, since you suddenly become aware of all the naughty things you are doing, when you simply start to track how you eat and lift. This, is the power of Precious. Precious guides. Precious protects.
