Sunday School: Catholicism vs Protestantism, and Some Thoughts on Jordan Peterson

by Pat Flynn

Catholicism vs Protestantism

Pat is joined on the podcast by his longtime friend Aaron to discuss and (civilly) debate the differences between Catholicism and Protestantism. Pat takes the Catholic side, Aaron comes from the perspective of a non-demoninational Evangelical. The topics hit upon are quite diverse, and include:

  • The authority and interpretation of Scripture; most importantly: Is Scripture the only authority? Or is Scripture just an authority? How do we know?
  • What is “truth”?
  • What the Catholic Church is, and isn’t.
  • Pat’s reasons for  leaving Protestantism and becoming Catholic, and Aaron’s responses.
  • A discussion of the Church fathers and what they believed.
  • What does faith really mean, and how can it be justified?
  • The Catholic vs Protestant view of Salvation.
  • How each side addresses the Problem of Evil.

The gentleman even begin with some thoughts on Jordan Peterson and how he seems to effectively be serving as a bridge to religion for a many people, even if both Aaron and Pat would disagree with a certain number of his particular, theological viewpoints, which are also discussed.

Please enjoy!

One of the biggest reasons I come back to your podcasts is because you’re not afraid to engage with people from different schools of thought and/or belief. The discussions are civil and intelligent, either quality being rare today and the combination all but unheard of. Thanks for another interesting discussion about faith and the spiritual world.

Pat as you know we’ve discussed the differences between Catholicism and Protestantism so I enjoyed hearing you and your friend Aaron present your individual beliefs and the reasons supporting them. I didn’t know about general revelation vs. specific revelation so it’s a new concept to look into (although I don’t think it happens through the Catholic Church). I just don’t see salvation as coming through being a practicing member of the Catholic Church. I also believe the Bible is the Alpha and Omega of doctrine. The church does not establish doctrine as it’s already established in the Bible. It happens through accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior. I also think people can be Christians regardless of church denomination or even going to church for that matter (although the Bible is clear on the blessings of assembling with the saints). In any event, I thoroughly enjoyed this analysis and kudos for bringing in an Evangelical to discuss things with you. I hope Aaron returns.

As always, Mike, and though we disagree, I greatly appreciate your comments, readership, and civil demeanor regarding religious exchange! If you don’t mind, I may take up my next conversation with Aaron by addressing some of your points. I think that could be a good kicking-off point for our next conversation.
