Pat – I once read about a college football coach ( I do not remember his name) that thought a rep count of double 70lbs KB long cycle C&P’s was a better measure of strength than bench press weight. What do you think would be a good standard max rep count to shoot for in this clean and press test? ken
Pat Flynn says
Everything is so specific it’s hard to say. But generally (though somewhat hesitantly) my answer would be… yes. Long cycle C&P is more demonstrative of qualities that would be more beneficial to most athletes than bench press.

Pat,
I was not implying that I wanted the specificity of football strength, I’m entirely too old for that. My interest is in general full body strength. I was wondering what a good standard rep range would be for double kettlebell clean and press with general strength in mind? ken

Sorry for the miscommunication…

I see what you’re saying, Ken. I would suggest getting to a 2 x 24kg double press for 5 reps. That’s a decent standard for most men. For women, 2 x 16kg.

Wow, that’s surprises me… Either I have a natural aptitude for double KB C&P, or that is too low of a standard. I suppose I could have fostered a specialization, if you will, but I barely train these days and it’s not like I’m that big.
