So people are often like hey Pat how do I lose some weight, you know? And I tell them the same thing I usually tell everybody which is why bother most people just fail. But then they say how they’re different and how they’re going to work really, really hard at it and that they’ll do anything I tell them and that nothing is going to stop them from achieving their goal this time not even their sacrilegious husband. So I say OK, alright, settle down a minute, and let’s think about what you’re saying. Next thing you know a bus rolls up and a bunch of nuns walk off and since I’m Catholic I obviously have to show them some respect. Hello Sister how are you, and good to see you Sister, etc, etc. But after that’s finished I can continue the conversation with that person about losing weight and this is where I tell them my most powerful and important secret, I tell them, here’s my most powerful and important secret, ready? Ready, they say. OK, so my most powerful and important secret is this. If you want to lose weight then you need to stop being such a baby about it and start using meal replacement shakes–like, protein shakes, you see what I’m saying?–because that is going to control hunger and lower calories without you having to do too much of anything that’s a pain in the tuchus (tochus is a sort of funny word I use sometimes instead of butt–that is what “tuchus” means). All you have to do is blend the stuff up in a Magic Bullet or whatever–hi, Sister, sorry I didn’t see you there!–and make sure you include protein and some lower sugar fruits and veggies. Also a scoop of nut butter would be fine. Next thing you know this person starts rolling out a list of excuses as long as their arm. Oh, but I don’t like protein shakes, I would rather just make food at home, and so I ask why they haven’t been doing that and then here comes another excuse: Oh, because it takes too long and I’d rather just grab something quick. Exactly, I say. Exactly! This is why the science–you know, science?!–has shown the use of meal replacements (aka “controlled fasting”) to be so effective for both short and long term weight loss. Listen here “friend” what I am telling you is no joke, it is a proven strategy that is effective, efficient, and convenient–you will hardly do any better than what I am explaining, and the best part is you can follow this plan even with that sacrilegious husband of yours (who I’m sure is a very nice person!!). But hey, we’re going to have to finish the rest of this on the podcast, I think my cat is… Sharon, no!

PS – If you think this episode is interesting then you will probably find it an utter fascination to realize that I am including a very cool, very simple, 1 -page “controlled fasting” plan for how to lose up to 10lbs in just 2 weeks through the use of strategic meal replacements.
This plan is a bonus (meaning freeeee!) for any person who pre-orders my upcoming book How to Be Better at (Almost) Everything, which you can do so here:

There is so much misinformation and pseudoscience out there whether it’s nutrition or investing. I appreciate your insights Pat because you back up what you say with information a person can check out for themselves. I’m really thinking about adopting a partial meal-replacement plan, but this only confirms my beliefs it’s a good way to go. My biggest obstacle will be finding a protein powder that tastes good (no aftertaste).

It’s true that the bottom line is calorie intake, but as you point out, there’s some complexity too. You can cut your caloric intake back and eat whatever you choose, but chances are, you’re not going to keep the weight off, and you may not get the nutrients you need. There’s a half-baked way to do everything and the proper way. When it comes to your body and your health, do you really want to take any approach other than the right one?

What I really appreciate is how you’ve done the research and personally experienced whatever you promote. I always want to know the scientific basis for any claim and you’re always able to bring that to the picture to make us understand better why something works and why something doesn’t. That’s just one of the many reasons why I’ve been a longtime follower, Pat! You just genuinely want the best for everyone and I couldn’t be more thankful to be able to just continuously learn from you. I have a Nutri Bullet at home! I believe almost everyone has one now. Ha ha!
