Pat talks with professional philosopher — and expert-generalist — Tim McGrew on the importance of skill stacking.
Discussion includes a list of skills Dr. Tim argues every person should have to increase their odds of success in life, and that don’t require all that much time to gain (at least some) geneneral competency in. From logic to memory techniques, even constructing paper airplanes, there’s something in this episode for everyone.

Tim’s comments on the Krueger Effect remind me of something my dad told me once. He played high school basketball and was very good. However, when he was in the military, he saw a group of players from the entire branch that just blew him away. He told me the same thing Tim said, you don’t realize the limits of your skills until you start advancing in skill levels. I’ve found the same thing in school. There’s a big difference between undergraduate school and graduate school, and an even bigger jump when you get to the doctoral level.

If you want to learn about skill stacking, check out Pat’s book “How to Be Better At (Almost) Everything..” People who read the blog comments know I’m a big Pat Flynn fan and I think his idea of generalism really is the way to go. I’ve incorporated it into my life over the last several months and it’s amazing how it’s helped me learn things quicker and retain the knowledge better than before.
