Having a background in guitar, I’ve always wanted to learn another instrument. So when my wife enrolled me in piano lessons with our son Roan, I figured now was as good a time as any. Plus, this gives me another opportunity to put the principles of my book into play and show that an old, fat dad can still learn the occasional new trick.
The most difficult thing about piano is getting the hands to work independently; something I’ve never had to do as a guitarist. And since I knew this would be a serious challenge for Captain Slow-Learner over here, I wanted to attack this as early as possible, which is why I chose Linus and Lucy with all its syncopation and whatnot.
Here’s me wrestling through the first part. It isn’t great, but you can validate me if you want. I wouldn’t hate that.

Wait, what? You are either pulling my leg, or you are a piano prodigy. I always thought Linus & Lucy was pretty difficult because of the syncopation. Sounds like you are nailing it, especially if you are a beginner.

Agreed! I learned to play piano with the right hand first, then add in the left. I think it’s extremely difficult to learn with both at the same time and that song is NOT easy! I’m impressed. I don’t think you will be mediocre in a year if you continue to practice an hour a day!

Very kind of your, Mary – and encouraging. Thanks!

Well, shucks. Thanks, Jospeh!
As for the prodigy comment: Id’ say it’s simply my prior background in music that’s given me a slight advantage here. I understand the learning process and how tedious it can be, and so I have no problem slowing things down to a snails pace to ingrain the patterns, which is what I’ve been doing with Linus and Lucy. I appreciate the encouragement!

Wow- when you said mediocre, you were seriously underselling yourself! I’ve always wanted to learn to play the piano, too. The closest I got was babysitting for the piano teacher’s kids so that my SISTER could have lessons :-0 ! My birthday is in a few weeks and I was thinking of asking my husband and kids for some lessons. You’ve inspired me to consider that more seriously!

I say go for it. I’ve been having an absolute blast learning piano. Even more fun than I thought I would.
